Mesenchymal stem cells were originally named bone marrow stromal cells.
They are a population of adult stem cells with a large capacity for self-renewal and multipotency for differentiation into cell types such as osteoblasts, chondrocytes, myocytes, adipocytes and β-pancreatic islets cells.
